Foam Pumpkin Carving 101

Okay - take a good sip from your coffee or other beverage of choice and dive in. First step is to tape your stencil to the front of the pumpkin.

Start poking holes around the outline of the design.

Use the razor to cut out the design - start from the middle or smallest parts and work outwards.

Next we do the next largest section of the design.

We're almost there. I'm through my second cup of coffee and third trip to the bathroom.

Yay! Finished the design! Time to install the lamp.

Using the base of the lamp as a template cut out a circle on the bottom of the pumpkin.

Install the lamp (it just plugs into the base)

Here we have the finished products:

As you can see, the lamp on the far left glows the brightest, the rest of the pumpkins are lit by battery powered strobe lights. While not being as bright as the lamp-lit pumpkin, they mimic fairly closely a pumpkin lit by a candle.

Things to keep in mind - the pumpkins are more rigid than an organic pumpkin which if you're not used to it can be troublesome. This very rigidity also means that a more elaborate design can be done on the pumpkin. Work slowly and carefully with the razor, the foam is not too forgiving if you make a mistake.
